Q: What kinds of damage can the covering of XLPE Covered Conductor suffer during installation?

A: Common damage during installation includes scratches from friction with the ground or tower members during stringing, deformation from squeezing when the pulley diameter is too small, and marks from tying with iron wire. Once the covering is damaged, that point no longer has tracking resistance. It is recommended to repair with a dedicated repair tape or cut out that section.

Q: When this conductor is used in coastal areas, is additional corrosion protection needed under the covering?

A: There is no water-blocking layer between the covering and the conductor. Coastal salt spray may penetrate from the ends or from damaged areas of the covering. The conductor itself is homogeneous aluminum alloy and has some resistance to salt spray, but sealing the ends and joints is recommended to reduce moisture ingress along the conductor.

Q: What standards are used to verify the tracking resistance of the covering?

A: Track-resistant high-density polyethylene (TR-HDPE) is verified according to ASTM D1248, and track-resistant cross-linked polyethylene (TK-XLPE) is verified according to ASTM D2656 and ICEA S-66-524. The covering type and corresponding standard should be specified at the time of ordering.
